“What is the feeling when you're driving away from people, and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? It's the too huge world vaulting us, and it's good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.”

Music as a Universal Tool

Well this blog has been a long time coming. Seeing as I'm obsessed with music and I've been living in a foreign country for almost 2 1/2 months listening to relatively the same playlist that I could be on Main Street in Huntington. Lady Gaga, Pitbull, and Kid Cudi not only sweep the Billboard at home but also across the ocean.

I have been trying to discover more authentic music from every region I've been to and I sometimes even get odd stares when I ask the question: But what do you really listen to? Although music has probably started more than half my conversations with foreigners. It amazes me how it is such a universal tool. Even smaller bands that don't recieve much publicity seem to travel to the oversea airwaves.
I would probably say I've gained more musical taste from my roommates than from Madridlianos.
But Spanish guitar and flamenco has made its way into my music loving heart. To me the composition of Spanish guitar is so seductive and personal. No words need to taint the intricate strings. While in Grenada we stumbled upon a street performer playing the Spanish guitar and I felt like that scene right out of Vicky Cristina Barcelona minus handsome Javier Bardem. I sat there for a good 15 mins not even noticing my friends had wandered elsewhere.
In Italy I was introduced to Italian Bossa Nova by a man from Naples adequately named Floriano (man of the flowers). This genre of music proves to be more modern and less emotional although still artistic.
I guess my main point through this scattered blog post is although I have changed my music taste and knowledge has not. Because of this aspect I am some what dissapointed in Europe. But don't worry Spain Italy and France you make up for it in architecture, historical depth, attractive men, cuisine, and many others components.

Here's an example of Spanish guitar and Italian bossa nova I found on YouTube:
